about

Rob Rapp’s Meanwhile in Collegeville has me dialing 1-9-9-3. But who’s answering? This isn’t Robert Pollard redux. Sure, it’s lo-fi (as fuck); and the pop [-craft] is tip-top. But while GbV gave gold stars to robot boy, Rapp is dealing with Rachel Levine and “dysfunctional machines.” It’s been a loooong 30 years; and with Meanwhile in Collegeville, Rapp stakes a solid claim as poet laureate of the American nightmare. It’s “8am in the factory” (“I feel alive,” Rapp sings doubtfully). In a few hours, a couple hundred “misled fucks” will storm the capitol. Meanwhile, in Phoenixville (at the Luxor, sources say), the rent is too damn high: “Then in 1995/I never thought that I would strive/to live this large/to be in charge/of such a hefty rental fee.” Nor I, my brother. At least we have Meanwhile in Collegeville, 14 fuzzy, jagged indie-pop pills. Get in, kids: we’re going back to Bacton.
